1. | Can I have a viewing and a funeral and still be cremated? |
2. | What is the difference between a guaranteed and non guaranteed funeral trust? |
3. | Which type of trust is better? |
Question #1 | Can I have a viewing and a funeral and still be cremated? |
Answer: | Yes. This type of service is very common. Most funeral homes have special cremation caskets that are made for this very type of service. The funeral would take place exactly the same way a traditional funeral would take place. The only difference would be at the end of the service the deceased would be cremated and not buried. |
Question #2 | What is the difference between a guaranteed and non guaranteed funeral trust? |
Answer: | With a guaranteed funeral trust you get exactly what you arranged for, regardless of what the balance of the trust is. Excess funds stay with the funeral home, but, if there is a short coming the family is not required to pay. With non guaranteed trusts any excess funds are returned to the family, but, if there is a short coming of funds the family is required to pay the difference. |
Question #3 | Which type of trust is better? |
Answer: | There are two schools of thought on this. Many funeral homes will use non guaranteed trusts and tout the fact that excess funds are returned, but, they usually fail to mention that the family will be required to pay more if there is a shortcoming of funds at the time of death. The only way to guarantee that you will get exactly what you arranged for and never have to pay anything additional is to use a guaranteed trust. Sometimes there is an excess that the funeral home will keep and sometimes there is a shortcoming that the funeral home will absorb. But the bottom line is that you will get exactly what you paid for with no risk of further charges. We offer both types of trusts at Cummings Funeral Home. We explain both options when making a prearrangement and allow the family to chose what is right for them. |
