Sam Cummings Jr. Licensed Funeral Director
Our Heritage
Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. is a family run business with its roots firmly planted in the Kane and Mt. Jewett area.
In 1941 Wilson and Catherine Cummings moved to Kane and founded Cummings Funeral Home at 151 Greeves St. This is still the same site used today. At that time there were two other homes already operating in Kane - Volmer Brothers and O.G. Brown funeral homes.
Wilson’s son, Sam, attended college at I.U.P. where he received a B.S. in biology and education. He also attended the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, where he received his mortuary science degree.
Upon graduation Sam married Marian and they both taught school in Zelienople, PA until Wilson’s untimely death.
Wilson died of a heart attack in 1965 at the age of 50. After his death Catherine obtained her “Widow’s License” and ran the business for a year with the help of a licensed funeral director. She did this so that her son could secure his teaching certificate before returning home to run the family business.
Sam and Marian returned to Kane with their three-month-old daughter Kristin. Their other children, Sam Jr. and Stacey were both born in Kane.
After graduation from the Kane Area High School, Kristin and Stacey attended Penn State and Sam Jr. attended Gannon University. Sam Jr. was the first person to graduate from Gannon’s mortuary science program where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree. After completing Gannon’s courses Sam attended the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science to receive a Bachelor of Mortuary Science Degree
In January of 1991, Sam Jr. returned to Kane and served his apprenticeship with his father. Since that time he and his father have shared the duties of running the funeral home.
Every generation of the Cummings family has been active in the community through civic and service organizations, volunteer work, and special projects.
Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. has always tried to give as much as possible back to the community that has supported it for over 70 years. It makes sure that all donations made will directly benefit the local community.
